Accessibility

New Mexico Breweries should work for everyone who wants to find a brewery, whether you use a mouse, a keyboard, a screen reader, voice control, or a phone with the text turned up.

The standard we aim for

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA, the international standard for accessible websites. We are not fully there yet. The gaps we know about are listed below.

What we have done

  • Tested the site in October 2026 against WCAG 2.2 AA with automated tools, keyboard-only use, and a review of the page code, in both Chrome and Safari, on desktop and phone, in both color modes.
  • Chose dark and light color schemes with measured contrast for text, links, buttons and borders. The switch in the site header changes between them.
  • Made every control show a visible outline when you reach it with a keyboard.
  • Kept keyboard focus inside the mobile menu while it is open, and returned it to the menu button when it closes.
  • Labeled every form field, marked required fields in the label text, and listed every brewery on the map as a card below it, so nothing is available only through the map.

Known limitations

These are the gaps we know about as of October 8, 2026:

  • Individual brewery markers on the map cannot be reached by keyboard yet. You can move to the numbered cluster markers and zoom in with a keyboard, and screen readers announce how many breweries each cluster holds. Every brewery on the map is also listed as a card below it, and screen readers get the full list of breweries.
  • The brewery list is one long page. All breweries load at once so the map can show them together, which makes the page long to move through by keyboard or screen reader. Each category (breweries, brewpubs, taprooms, cideries) has its own shorter page.
  • The category filter is not shown on phones. The category pages are still reachable from the menu.
  • Some parts of the site come from third-party code. The map is built with Leaflet and OpenStreetMap, and the menus and cookie notice come from our website theme. Where we can work around their limitations we do; some menu buttons still describe themselves as pop-up menus when they are simple lists of links.
  • We have not yet tested with a screen reader. Our findings so far come from automated tools, keyboard testing, and inspection of the page code.
